Easy Crochet Duck Pattern for Beginners, Step by Step
A larger body ball and a smaller head ball, joined together, with a folded beak and two flat wings — the natural next step after a single-ball pattern.
What you'll need
- Worsted weight yarn in yellow (or white) and orange
- 3.5mm crochet hook
- Polyester stuffing
- Yarn needle, stitch marker, scissors

Make a magic ring and start the sphere
Start with a magic ring in yellow — this becomes the duck's body. Rnd 1: 6 sc in the ring (6). Rnd 2: inc in each st around (12). Rnd 3: *sc 1, inc* repeat around (18). Rnd 4: *sc 2, inc* repeat around (24).

Rnd 5–7: sc in each st around, no increases (24). This is where the ball gains height without getting any wider.

Rnd 8: *sc 2, dec* repeat around (18). Rnd 9: *sc 1, dec* repeat around (12) — begin stuffing firmly now. Rnd 10: dec around (6).
6 stitchesClose the hole
Fasten off, leaving a long tail. Thread it onto a yarn needle, weave through the front loops of the remaining 6 stitches, pull tight to close the hole, then weave the end inside to hide it.
Make the head
Work a second, smaller ball in yellow: Rnd 1: 6 sc in a magic ring (6). Rnd 2: inc around (12). Rnd 3: *sc 1, inc* repeat around (18). Rnd 4–5: sc around, no increase (18). Rnd 6: *sc 1, dec* repeat around (12) — begin stuffing. Rnd 7: dec around (6). Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing.
6 stitchesMake the beak
In orange: chain 4, work 3 sc across, turn, sc 3 again for one more row. Fold the small rectangle in half diagonally to form a triangle and tack the folded corner with a couple of stitches.
Make the wings
Make two, in yellow. Chain 6, work 1 hdc, dc, dc, hdc, sc across, then work back along the other side of the foundation chain the same way to fill out the oval. Fasten off, leaving a tail.
Assemble the duck
Position the head on top of the body and sew it in place with the tail from Step 5, going around the seam twice for a secure join. Attach safety eyes level with the top of the beak, sew the folded beak just below and between them, then sew the two wings to the sides of the body, angled slightly back.
Tip Sewing a smaller head onto a larger body is the single most common amigurumi construction — once you're comfortable with it here, it carries over to almost every other animal pattern.
Frequently asked questions
How do I make sure the head doesn't flop to one side?
Stuff both the head and the top of the body firmly before sewing, and go around the seam at least twice with your sewing tail — a single loose pass is the most common cause of a wobbly head.
Can I skip the beak fold and just sew on a flat triangle?
Yes — crochet a small flat triangle (or cut one from felt) instead of folding a rectangle. Either method gives a similar result.
What size hook and yarn gives the best result?
A 3.5mm hook with worsted weight yarn gives a tight enough fabric that stuffing won't show through the stitches — going up a hook size will leave visible gaps.
